Besides the fact that there has been no proven direct correlation between video game violence to real life, mental illness is not something that should be poked and prodded. The human mind is a very deep, complex vessel that perceives things in a way that accepts the fact that the world is a good and normal place, however when factors like physical harm and abuse are dealt to that mind it becomes tampered with and the reality around them becomes distorted. Mental illness is is something that needs to be treated with intense care and treatment and should not be shunned away under any circumstances.
When it comes to the reality of crime, mental illness could be the answer that everyone is looking for as to why it is occurring as much as it is. As humans we shape realities based on what is happening around where it can be affected differently based on how it has been treated or what has been going on in the world. According to the theory of Social Constructionism, human beings create their social realities through processes of social relationships and communication; this created reality often diverges from objective reality So when there has been a disconnect with reality due to the distorted vision that people with mental illness have, it can be very dangerous for the other people around them because how they think and act is different than those who have not been abused at an early age.
I urge those to consider who they are talking to whether it be a teenage boy, a middle-aged woman or an old man, to treat them with mutual respect because you do not know what goes through their heads. This goes outside the realm that is violent video games and is a very serious matter that we as citizens must attend to to prevent future mass shootings in parks, schools or any public spaces where people may be in danger. Although there may be no direct correlation with violent video games and criminal violence, we should still keep our eyes on the ball and make sure we help those who need therapeutic treatment to help those with serious mental illness issues.
